Kirby Anthoney

I am going to do a little something different here. On my list of cases to research I had the name Nancy Newman. I had a notation that this was a crime committed in Alaska but like most cases I knew little going in. The difference in this case is that I found very little specifics on this case and I am curious if readers can either find more or know more.

Here is what I can tell you....

Kirby Anthoney was originally from Idaho, as was the Newman family. John Newman, the husband of Nancy, was Kirby's uncle. The Newman family, that included daughters, Melissa and Angie, had been in Alaska for a few years when Kirby went to stay with them briefly with his girlfriend in 1985. It was said that Kirby left Idaho after being the prime suspect in the rape and beating of a twelve year old girl. The case did not seem to go anywhere because the girl was left with brain damage and could not identify Kirby. But this was far from Kirby's first run in with the law, nor was it the first time that he had escaped any prosecution or jail time. In 1982 he confessed to an armed robbery in which an wheelchair bound, elderly person (man? Woman?) had been tied up and sprayed with mace. He later retracted his confession and for whatever reason the case was dismissed. Kirby had been arrested apparently several times over the years for things such as burglary, larceny and even disorderly conduct. My research simply stated that most of the cases were dismissed and that he never served any jail time for any of his crimes.

It was said that once in Anchorage Alaska, Kirby and his girlfriend stayed a few months with the Newman family and then the two left to find work in another area of the state. A few months later Kirby was back. The girlfriend had kicked him out and he was fired from his job. It seems that he stayed again with the Newman's for a short time. My research indicates however that something happened in the relationship between Kirby and the family and once again he moved out.

On March 13, 1987 John Newman was apparently away from his home on business of some sort. Prosecutors allege that Kirby Anthoney went to the Newman home that day and by time he left Nancy Newman and her two children, eight year old Melissa and three year old Angie, were dead. The following day a co-worker of Nancy's was concerned when she did not report to work. Exactly how or who discovered the bodies is unclear.

It would be determined that both Nancy and Melissa had been sexually assaulted as well as beaten. Reports say that Melissa was also stabbed but I found nothing about a certain cause of death for Nancy. Three year old Angie had her throat cut, reportedly almost to decapitation. Prosecutors would say that a handprint near Melissa's body matched Kirby and that pubic and facial hairs found throughout the home and near the bodies also matched to him. He was charged with three counts of first degree murder, two counts of first degree assault and one count of kidnapping for tying Melissa's hands.

It appears that there apparently was a trial and a conviction. Kirby would be sentenced to 357 years. It seems that he has appealed his case a few times but I could access very little information on this and it seems for the most part everything has been upheld. I even had difficulty accessing information through the Department of Corrections. After several tries I was finally able to simply determine that he is still in custody, which barring an appeal or his death sounds about right, with a “release date” of April 22, 2225.

When researching this case there were pages and pages of things to look at. The problem was that the majority of the information referred to a book called Murder in the Family by Burl Barer or an episode of the television show, Forensic Files. I did find another blog similar in nature to this one that touched on things however even if they had listed more specifics I would have wanted some confirmation of those facts just as I would expect anyone reading here would like.

In the end all I was able to determine it seems was that Kirby Anthoney was all but a career criminal without the convictions to show it. I am left to wonder how he seemingly got away with so much but I also wonder the specifics of this particular case.

I would love to hear more!

  1. I have read extensively about this case. It is one of the more disturbing ones I have come across, and Kirby Anthoney is one of the reasons I support the death penalty. He is a bona fide psychopath. I know he will never leave prison, but he deserves the ultimate punishment.

    2. I don't understand Alaska is a red state. Im confused why the death penalty is not in that state.

    3. Red states are fiscally conservative. Death penalty cases cost millions to prosecute and are therefore way more expensive than keeping someone in prison for an entire lifetime. Also, the size of the penalty is proven to have no effect on a person's criminal behavior because people who do plan a crime also make plans for avoiding getting caught.

  2. My blood boils. Apparently he's an artisan in prison working with rare woods and is being praised for donating some crap.

  3. I am so interested in the case, but it's so hard to find anything. We found out that Kirby is my great-grandmother's brother's son, since I've tried to find as much as I can.

    2. I believe in capital punishment. If he gets out in 5 years he will kill again. They should have srung him up by his balls years ago. And then when they rotted off slit his throat a little more everyday. Let him be raped every day until he dies. He is a sick man. We need to bring back punishment that fits the crimes people in other countries. I believe he should be put through everything that he put that precious family through!

    3. He needs to be beaten with a baseball bat that is studded with nails until he's dead.

  4. The book you have mentioned Murder in tge Family tells the whole story and trial. I found it both intriguing and frustating with the Defense Lawyer for Anthoney always objecting to the Prosecution's evidence and witnesses!! You must read the book I couldn't put it down. Although I have Kindle and love to read from that about true crime stories. That monster is nothing but an habitual pathological liar and one of tge worst psychopath's alive!!!! Jodi Arias murder of Travis Alexander book by the Prosecutor Juan Martinez is another fantastic read about this true murder case and to say overkill by her is an understatement!!

    1. The book doesn't tell the whole story or truth, The girl he raped and beat was my little Sister. She was not left with brain damage she just had no memory of what happened. The Twin Falls police did little to nothing to find out the truth. There were 2 other's involved and no charges were ever pressed against any one. They sent my Sister's bloody clothes back to my Mother so they never even kept the evidence.

  6. I worked down the street from the condos or apartments where this happened. I was a delivery driver who happened to drive by the morning when the police were investigating. I will never forget the look on the police chiefs face outside of the apartment. I would consider the color of his face as being ashen, kind of like he was in shock from what he saw in there. Many months after this had happened a friend of mine from where I worked at rented the condo where it happened and had me over for dinner one night. He did not know at that time what Had happened there. I wasn’t sure at the time if it was the same place or not but it was and I told my friend I could not go back there again. He and his family were devoted Christians and were able to handle living there for a while but eventually moved. At that time there seem to be a lot of Satan worshipers in town and my friend told me how he sometimes would hear chanting outside of the apartment in the middle of the night. There were rumors that Anthony Kirby’s picture was found When some of those Satan worshipers were arrested on unrelated charges. Scum of the earth is all I can say, and yes there should be a death penalty And Anthony Kirby should’ve gotten the chair.

  7. I agree. He should have been put down like a rabid animal, immediately following his conviction. This case absolutely baffles me. Horrible horrible case.

I was at a party in an area north of twinfalls called devil's corral we had highschool party kegs there with big bonfires if I remember correctly somebody shot him in the neck one timeand I remember him beating this guy with a hard plastic mug and supposedly it was the wrong guy he beat ..unfortunately whoever shot him should have aimed higher, Cheryl and the girls would still be alive if it was
a gunshot and I did personally see the hole about the size of a .22 cal. Didn't look like a knife wound...born and raised in twinfalls I knew Debbie Heck ,Dan Grant and Kirby's brothers Kirby was just a BAD SEED....His family are all respectable people as Debbie n Dan are ....So sad for that Fam....

  11. My comment is in reference to the Kirby being a habitual offender but without convictions. It has been proven statistically that white suspects are arrest more but get so many breaks and case dismissals...and that is not fair....as we all know now look what it leads to...

  15. I'm so pissed off i just seen this case again my 2 time seeing it on FBI Flies. First i want to say he knew Exactly what he was doing he went there to they house, he went with the intent of doing wrong and committing a crime. He kills 2 beautiful babies and their mother. God knows what other stuff this psycho has done and has got away with. The death penalty should have been ENFORCED for a useless monsters like kirby. Leaving him to live a life in jail is giving him a slap on the wrist. Its cheaper to use The Lethal injection in death penalty cases. How much can a poison in a syringe cost the state? I mean really?! so simple to do. SMH all the other people that have done such horrific crimes like this who have gotten the death penalty and YET still ALIVE is beyond me . I mean why should they hand that sentence down to then TO THEN TAKE YEARS to carry it OUT????. I mean the system needs FIXING because if the death penalty is handled out it should take place the same month sentencing was giving. So this has me in an uproar that the system hasn't gotten this crap together yet when it comes to getting rid of these monster's that's why the world is not safe smh..

  18. He had lice in his cubic regions it was found on the bodies he had the victims camera which he stole proof he had no idea how to work the camera. Journey into darkness the book from the FBI profiler discusses more in detail about the crime and what he was found guilty of and sentenced I worked in prison for 20 years he should not be walking around these people are threatening even to staff for the things that they want and his nature has not changed it will not change he is a murderer and a child killer. He thought nothing of taking the life of two children and sexually assaulting them most inmates don't know what other inmates are in for they do that specifically because some crimes are so offensive even among criminals that they will often kill a predator especially one that prays on children.or will prey on them. That we don't have the courage to throw the switch is ridiculous to me that often even if they're going to kill you you have 15 years of appeals to go through perhaps the only real Justice will ever find is when this monster meets his maker only God can decide what to do with this thing called Kirby I think a good start would be hell. Previously he brain damaged a young child 12 years of age assaulting her this was strong indication of who this man was and is there is no drug on the market that can make him human or give him a conscience he should have been locked up then and perhaps this family would still be alive.

  19. There was also a town transvestite killed in a manner similar to Nancy Newman. The body was left outside a car wash, and I think KA may have worked there. I don't think the killing was solved, and KA was not investigated, but... KA also beat and terrified 3 girlfriends.
